For Colored Girls

After Precious, I guess it was time for Tyler Perry to do his male version of a black girls' happily ever after, or at least attempt. His attempt was to write an adaptation for Ntozake Shange's choreopoem For Colored Girls Who  Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. With the skills we either think Tyler Perry does or does not possess, we do know that he had access to the funds to make it happen.

Enough of the jargon-esque intro, lets get to the actual review, by beginning with cinematography and work our way to the writing.

Cinematography: ii
It was clear someone went to a class on shooting emotion; a directing technique. The close ups and zoom in's were toooo much honey. I felt like I was in a bad 3-D movie. sidebar: what if he did film Madea Goes on a Cruise in 3-D, I would stop watching movies FOREEEEVVVEEERRR (sandlot voice).

Acting: iii
I have always thought that the all-star  line-ups were well casted, well mostly. However, Kimberly Elise is always plays a battered women. Can we get her some uppers, a cocktail with Karen from Will and Grace and pot of gold at the end of HER rainbow.

Screenplay: i1/2
OK, so y'all know imma go in. *pats weave and smacks gum* Granted this was an adaptation and most of the dialogue was not really his own, saves the movie. Though  I will give his props of his creative story efforts. I believe exposing this to younger generations, will get them to research the poems and the playwright, and be inspired somehow.

Misc: iv
Starting in the business with cardboard and weak wooden backgrounds, Perry used the money wisely on detailed stage production, great make-up, up-to-date weaves and fresh line ups.  *Snaps* Cliches and Hollywood happy endings can be good for something.

Overall: iii1/2
This was good movie. It was put together well, and it conveyed a message. I think with the original work setting a precedent for the stage. It would have been better to leave it on the stage. For Colored Girls will actually expose younger generations to  the original  piece For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuff. Or at least that is all one could hope for.

Scale: i-iv
